What Is a Girth Enhancer and How Does It Work?

A girth enhancer is a device worn on the penis to make it thicker during intimacy. Most are hollow sleeves that slide over the penis, and some are thin tubes used to help a sleeve fit better. The extra thickness comes from the material itself, so it lasts only while you wear it. A girth enhancer does not change the size of your penis.

At RX Sleeve, we have been making realistic penis sleeves since 2004, so we have spent a long time on how a sleeve should fit and feel. The girth enhancers worth using fit snugly, are made from body-safe silicone, and stay securely in place.

What counts as a girth enhancer?

A girth enhancer is any product meant to add girth to the penis. Girth is the distance around the penis, measured the same way you would measure around your wrist. Most girth enhancers sold today are wearable. You put one on before intimacy and take it off afterward.

The term is also used for things that work very differently. Some clinics use it for filler injections, and it shows up on pills and creams sold as male enhancement. Here is how the common types compare.

Type What it is How it adds girth How long the effect lasts
Full-coverage sleeve (sometimes called a sheath) A hollow sleeve that covers the whole penis, including the head The sleeve's walls add thickness around the penis Only while you wear it
Open-ended sleeve A sleeve that covers the shaft and leaves the head uncovered The sleeve's walls add thickness around the shaft Only while you wear it
Girth tube or insert A thin, soft tube worn on the penis or inside a sleeve Fills extra space so a sleeve fits snugly Only while you wear it
Filler injections A medical procedure in which a gel filler is injected under the skin of the penis The filler adds volume under the skin Temporary fillers wear off over time
Pills and creams Supplements and lotions sold as male enhancement None proven No proven effect

How does a girth enhancer work?

A wearable girth enhancer works by adding a layer of material around your penis. Your penis sits inside the sleeve's inner hole, and the outside of the sleeve is what your partner feels. The thickness of the sleeve's walls is the girth that gets added. For example, picture a sleeve with a 4-inch inner hole and a 5.5-inch outside girth. It would add about an inch and a half of girth while you wear it.

Blue card: a 4-inch inner hole and 5.5-inch outside girth add about 1.5 inches, only while you wear it

Fit is what makes a girth enhancer work well. The inner hole should hold your penis snugly. If the hole is too loose, the sleeve can shift during intimacy. If it is too tight, the sleeve will be uncomfortable to wear.

A sleeve also needs something to hold it in place. Most sleeves use a stretchy loop that fits around the testicles, and some add a belt that goes around the waist. Every RX Sleeve comes with The Grip™, our patented harness, which pairs a stretchable silicone loop with an adjustable belt about 60 inches long.

Firmness matters too, especially for men who do not have a full erection. A soft sleeve flexes and stretches, and it works best for men who can keep some erection. A firm sleeve has a soft head for your partner's comfort, but the rest of it stays rigid even if you lose your erection or cannot get one. That is why men living with erectile dysfunction (ED) often need a firm sleeve.

Feeling varies from man to man. Many men still feel stimulation while wearing a sleeve, but how much depends on things like past surgery, treatments, and blood flow.

Can you make your penis thicker permanently?

No. A wearable girth enhancer adds thickness only while you wear it. Your penis is the same size when you take it off.

Be careful with products that promise lasting growth. According to the Mayo Clinic, none of the pills and lotions sold for penis enlargement has been proven to work, and some may be harmful. Mayo also says there is no proven way to make a penis larger. Vacuum pumps can make the penis look bigger for a short time, but using a pump too often or for too long can damage tissue and lead to less firm erections.

Some men use a pump and a sleeve together. They use the pump to get an erection, put a constriction ring at the base, and then slide a sleeve over it. If you plan to do this, choose a sleeve with an inner hole that fits you after pumping, because your penis is larger after pumping than when it is soft.

Medical procedures are a separate category. Some clinics inject fillers under the skin of the penis to add girth. Doctors use these fillers off-label, which means for a purpose they were not approved for. Reported complications include swelling, lumps, and infection. The American Urological Association says fat injection to increase girth "has not been shown to be safe or efficacious." If you are thinking about any procedure, talk with a urologist first.

Can a penis sleeve help with erectile dysfunction?

A girth enhancer does not treat erectile dysfunction. What a firm sleeve can do is give you the support you need for intercourse, so you and your partner can stay close while you live with ED.

The FDA groups products like this as external penile rigidity devices, which are devices meant to create or keep enough rigidity for intercourse. Under the FDA's guidance, these devices are not meant to prevent or reverse ED. RX Sleeve is an FDA-listed Class II External Penile Rigidity Device. For the causes of ED and for medical treatment, your healthcare provider is the right person to talk to.

Are girth sleeves safe?

How safe a girth enhancer is depends mostly on what it is made of. Silicone is one of the safest materials for products that touch intimate skin. Research on sex products has found silicone among the safest options, while some plastics, such as PVC, can release chemicals called phthalates as they wear down. The same research notes that labels are not always accurate, and some products marked "100% silicone" are not.

Cheaper sleeves made from PVC or rubber can also irritate the skin and absorb odors over time. Warning signs of a low-quality material include a strong chemical smell, a sticky feel, or color that changes over time.

Our sleeves are made from certified skin-safe platinum silicone. It is non-porous, so it does not absorb fluids, and it is hypoallergenic. Whatever you use, wash it after every use and clean silicone the right way so it stays safe for you and your partner.

How do you choose a girth sleeve that fits?

Start with fit, then look at the material and how the sleeve stays on. These are the things to check:

  • Inner fit. The inner hole should match your own girth closely. Measure yourself before you buy so you can pick the right hole size.
  • Material. Look for certified skin-safe silicone rather than soft plastics like PVC or jelly rubber.
  • How it stays on. A loop or harness keeps the sleeve from slipping. Without one, a sleeve can slip or droop, especially if your erection fades.
  • Firmness. A soft sleeve suits men who can keep some erection. A firm sleeve suits men who cannot.
  • Outside size. Choose an outside girth your partner will be comfortable with. A larger sleeve is not always more comfortable, so it helps to talk it over together.

If a sleeve's inner hole feels a little loose, a girth tube can fill the extra space. Our Girth Enhancer Kit includes four soft silicone tubes, each about 5 inches long, with inner sizes from 2.5 to 4 inches. You roll a tube onto your penis or slip it into the sleeve's inner hole, and the sleeve then fits more snugly. For men who want a snugger fit and more support from a soft sleeve, the Girth Stiffener is a firm version of the same tube that helps keep the sleeve from bending.

Price chart: generic sleeves cost $50 to $100, quality silicone sleeves $200 to $700 and can last years

How much do girth sleeves cost?

Generic sleeves typically cost $50 to $100 each. Because they are made from lower-grade materials, they tend to tear or break down, and many men end up buying them several times. Medical-grade* silicone sleeves usually cost $200 to $700, and custom models cost more. A well-made silicone sleeve can last for years with proper care, so you are not replacing it every few months. Our standard realistic penis sleeves range from $299 to $525.
