How to Sanitize Silicone

How to Sanitize Silicone

For many people, silicone is one of the best materials for sex toys. It’s non-porous, meaning that it doesn’t harbor bacteria, and it’s soft and flexible. This makes it feel good for both partners. However, knowing how to sanitize silicone can be difficult.

In this blog post, we will teach you how to sanitize silicone sex toys using different methods.

We will also discuss what to watch out for when sanitizing silicone, so that you can be sure your toys are completely safe for use!

Create a Soaking Tub

Your first step to know how to sanitize silicone toys is going to be filling a tub with a cleaning solution of hot water and a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, then let your toy soak for up to 15 minutes.

This will help soften up any residue that is left on the toy before you really start getting into the sanitization.

You’ll want to dump all the toys you’re looking to clean into the tub at one time so that they all have an equal amount of time soaking in the solution.

Scrub the Silicone

Once the silicone has been sitting in the cleaning solution for 15 minutes you can go ahead and start taking out each toy individually and scrub them down.

Ideally, you can use any clean dishwashing sponge that hasn’t already been used to clean your dishes. Make sure it’s absolutely fresh, because any older sponges may have bacteria in the pores.

You can even add a drop of detergent to the sponge before using it to clean the silicone toy.

Make sure you scrub away at all surfaces on your toy, but you don’t want to use an abrasive cleaning tool like a scouring pad or plastic scrubber. These might strip away any of the nonstick qualities your toy has and could ruin its performance altogether.

Rinse and Repeat

Go ahead and wash the toy by rinsing it off with running water and make sure you get all of the soapy residue off.

If you’re wondering how to sanitize silicone parts of the toy that have residue, then you might want to try this process a couple of times to ensure you get everything.

Dry it fully using some kind of microfiber cloth so that you don’t leave any fibers on your toy and it stays super clean.

If you’ve already tried to soak and scrub your toy a couple of times but it’s still feeling rather sticky, then you’ll need to move on to more powerful techniques.

Use Your Oven

Medical grade silicon does well in extreme temps compared to other materials, so you can use your oven to learn how to sanitize silicone.

Set your oven to 350 degrees and use a baking pan and set your toy on top. Throw everything in the oven and wait about 10 minutes. The oven essentially will break down all of the remaining residue on your toy, making it easier to clean off.

You can essentially put all your silicone toys together on the same pan if they fit to save yourself some time.

Once the toys are done with the oven you can pull them out using an oven safe glove and let them cool for a minute or two so they aren’t too hot to the touch. Once they cool down you’re ready to move on to the next step.

Pour Some Baking Soda

Rinse your toys with some water, but do not dry them off. You’re going to put about a spoonful of baking soda on them, and when the baking soda mixes with the water, it should create a paste.

You’ll want to make sure you’re pouring the baking soda over the entire surface area of the toy.

Wait to clean the toys until the baking soda actually dries fully. This could, unfortunately, take a few hours, so go ahead and put on your favorite show while they wait to dry.

After they’ve dried fully, rinse off the paste with hot water. Then, give the toys a good scrub one more time with your sponge and some hot soapy water to get any remaining residue off.

If you still have some sticky material on the toy, you’ll want to pour a nickel size amount of baking soda on your sponge and start scrubbing the toy with the sponge to see if you can’t remove all foreign substances. These are all the basic steps you need to follow to learn how to sanitize silicone.

Sanitizing Your Silicone

Although it can take some time, as long as you are persistent you should be able to know how to sanitize silicone toys without any issues. Try soaking them first, scrubbing them, then using the oven technique, and if needed, scrub again.
